AXCESS Introduces Active RFID Hospital Tag Enabling
Automatic Patient Identification

Solution Provides Long Range Automatic Identification;
Complies With Upcoming HIPAA Privacy Mandate

DALLAS, TX, February 28, 2005 — AXCESS International Inc. (OTCBB: AXSI.OB), a leading provider of Active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems today introduced a patient identification tag that provides long range automatic identification, tracking and protection for hospital patients, wanderers and babies. The system is among the first to already enable compliance with the upcoming HIPAA Privacy Mandate. The first introduction of patient identification using active RFID will be implemented in a medium-size hospital in partnership with Creative Healthcare, Inc. The system is being demonstrated this week at the RFID World Conference and Exposition in Dallas.

Active RFID-based patient ID tagging easily integrates into existing hospital procedures, and is less invasive than barcode or passive RFID for both hospital staff and their patients. The re-usable watch-sized tags utilize the existing disposable wristbands used in hospitals. Tags are read automatically at long ranges without disturbing patients, enabling a fully automated solution for accurate patient identification while reducing labor and the threat of manual errors. For wandering patents and infants, the tags provide tracking and protection by alarming as they exit through controlled doorways. Alarms can be sent instantly, silently, and wirelessly to custodians and authorities.

Further, this solution provides access to a patient’s medical record only by authorized personnel. Only when both patient and authorized hospital staff are wearing assigned active AXCESS identification tags will the system recognize the request and deliver the patient’s medical record.

“This is not only a major technological achievement providing positive patient identification, but anticipates and sets a new standard for protecting a patient’s medical history from unauthorized electronic access thus adhering to the latest HIPAA security mandate to be in effect April 20, 2005,” commented Steve Everest, President and CEO Creative Healthcare Systems.

“The active RFID patient tag and portable reader deliver on the need for improved patient safety and privacy,” commented Allan Griebenow, President and CEO of AXCESS. “Automated patient identification enables hospitals and caregivers to focus more on what really matters - providing quality healthcare.”

The initial installation being performed at a mid-west hospital will use AXCESS’ newly released portable reader to automatically identify patients and the corresponding medication and treatment.

AXCESS’ patented ActiveTag RFID product uses small, battery powered tags (generically called “active” tags) that when automatically activated, transmit a wireless message typically 30 to 100 feet to hidden palm size receivers. The receivers are connected via an industry standard interface to existing security alarm equipment or networked on the existing corporate network. Optionally, the tag system can also be used to trigger security video recording and live remote video transmission. The tags are used for a variety of security applications including automatic personnel access to facilities, automatic vehicle access to parking areas and yards, corporate asset tracking and protection, as well as special purpose sensing. Automatic email alerting and paging is offered for rapid response to security incidents.
