Internal Zonal Security

Security Based on Authorization Level

Modern day security threats are more elusive and difficult to sense than they have ever been before. To respond effectively, organizations are using discrete and automated RFID solutions from Axcess to maximize the security and safety of customers, employees, contractors, visitors, and tourists. By designating specific zones, the technology can instantly determine and notify security personnel if anyone or anything has crossed into an area not approved for access by anyone.

By automating the capture of a broad collection of real-time security information the system has the capability for real time processing of the data, which enables automatic delivery of exception-based alerts for security personnel. Axcess brings together the very latest in sensor detection capabilities and integrates them into an intelligent, automated system.

How It Works

The ActiveTag™ system is a wireless RFID tag communications system comprised of activators, activation antennas, receivers and small, battery powered radio transponders or “tags”. In a typical installation, the tag is awakened by a low frequency (LF) 132 kHz radio activation signal generated by a small radio transmitter, the activator, connected to an antenna located in the pavement, in the ceiling or wall, above a doorway, etc. Upon activation, the tag transmits a high frequency (HF) radio signal (either 315 MHz or 433 MHz) containing, at a minimum, its preprogrammed ID number that uniquely identifies the source of each transmission.

Receivers convert the tag signals into data and then pass the information on to a host computer or controller running application software. Numerous standard communications protocols are currently supported, including serial (RS-232), network (Ethernet TCP/IP) and Wiegand (SIA 26-bit standard). However, the system can easily be adapted to virtually any standard or proprietary communications protocol. The receiver also supports user configurable decision logic, relay control and output filtering capabilities.

Implementation Overview

The Port of Bridgetown in Barbados, one of the leading ports in the Caribbean has integrated Axcess’ RFID and sensor system to enhance security measures across the entire port. The system includes Axcess’ unique ActiveTag™ technology and infrastructure; wireless sensors; and underwater cameras that work in concert to detect and manage security threats.

A major program of expansion has been under way to ensure the port's continuing status as “best in class,” and integrating Axcess’ ActiveTag™ technology bolstered the Port’s existing security making it more secure and safer than ever. The project follows a special study in the 1990s, which indicated that the Port of Bridgetown could be an engine for national economic growth by generating more cargo and tourism traffic. The port is already a key player in the local economy, providing the island with a commercial lifeline to the rest of the world.

For greater efficiency and safety of port operations, the port was divided into four main zones for cruise ship handling, cargo handling, bulk handling and leisure craft accommodation. The main approach channel and the inner harbor were dredged to allow larger cruise ships like the ‘Adventure of the Seas’ and the ‘Queen Mary 2’ to call at Bridgetown. The cargo handling area in the main port was expanded by some 9 acres. The existing facilities have undergone major renovation and reconstruction. Finally, a new pier will accommodate two large cruise ships simultaneously and will provide extra capacity to handle the expected rise in cruise arrivals. The two berths will boost the port's daily passenger handling capacity by about 8,000. This will also allow the port to continue to separate its cruise and cargo handling operations in the interests of passenger safety. The new system was designed to work in concert with the zonal concept and the existing Port security and growth plans.
